ABSORBENT COTTON- Feasibility Report

As I promised earlier, am trying to keep my words. Here is another simple and product in demand namely ABSORBENT COTTON. The volume of the project could be tailor made but with certain changes in the profit margins. Interested persons are advised to check the local market potential for a viable unit in that area. Any comments or queirys welcome.

ABSORBENT COTTON- Feasibilty Report
Product and Its uses:
Absorbent Cotton also known as “Surgical Cotton” or “Cotton Wool” is mainly used for medical purposes in hospitals, dispensaries, etc.

Though the use of absorbent cotton was started several decades ago, the growth of this industry took a boom with the recent development in medical facilities to corporate levels. Growing awareness of hygienic materials increased the demand for absorbent cotton. Absorbent cotton is also extensively used for making sanitary pads, napkins and filters.
Market Potential :
Demand for absorbent cotton increases with increase in population, number of hospitals, dispensaries, health centers, etc. Besides Indian market it has export potential too. Japan, USA and EU countries import absorbent cotton from india with specific standards.

Manufacturing Process :
Raw cotton is opened in CRIGHTON opener where it is loosened and dust and other particles removed. The cotton is then sent to a KIER where it is steamed for about 3 hours along with added chemicals like SODA ASH, CAUSTIC SODA, DETERGENY, etc. This treatment removes waxes and oils and softens foreign matters present in cotton.

Cotton is washed and bleached with chemicals like hydrogen peroxide or sodium hupochloride. This bleaching process not only whitens the cotton but also improves its absorbing quality and disintegrates left over foreign materials.

Its is then opened in a wet cotton opening machine and then dried in a dryer thus avoiding the dust mixing up again with cotton. After drying the cotton once again thoroughly opened up in lap room and made into laps. The laps are then fed into a carding machine and the cotton is prepared into thin layers.

These thin layers are rolled and packed and disbursed to the consumer.

Project estimation :
The estimates made for techno feasible plant set-up. Unit is viable with 100tons per annum set up with standard type of manufacturing activity.

FLOOR POLISH

Last weekend, I attend a coference arranged by Institute of Marine Engineers. As I went through the launge my eyes caught floor polish work going on to the marble floor. My mind went on thinking, yes its a simple product but with good demand.... 'FLOOR POLISH'!

In the present scenario, almost all commercial establishments are provided with ceramic, mosaic, granite and marble floorings. This made it necessary for the periodical floor polishing. With the advent of star hotels and sort, the demand for polish materials increasing. Here comes the demand for the FLOOR POLISH, a simple product to make and market in the local areas on a small scale. It comes in a semi indutrial product group which is used in mainly commercial establishments like hotels, shopping malls, hospitals. Preparing customised floor polish is even possible as the target market is local establishments with regualr demand.
THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS:
Floor polish consists of a mixture of a few waxes well distributed in a suitable solvent and some times customized with a fragrance too.

Melting process would be started with the wax having the highest melting point (approx.96C)and then other waxes in descending order of melting points would be added with continuous stirring. When the wax melt becomes a homegenious emelsfier, wax soluble dyes dissolved in a suitable solvent, would be added at 80C. This charge should not be allowed to cool rapidly. It is poured in standard tin containers while still in viscous state. Pouring process should take place in an airconditioned atmosphere so that the mixture doesnot cool down at a rapid rate.

A TYPICAL FORMULATION:
A Typical composition of FLOOR POLISH:
Carnuba Wax =12parts
Bees wax =4parts
Paraffin wax =5parts
Moontan Wax =3parts
Crystalline wax Emulsifier =2parts
Tyrpentine oil =74parts
PLANT AND EQUIPMENT:
For a small scale industry you need the following establishment:
Premises :-200sq.m. with a built in plant area of 50sq.m. minimum.
Equipment :-
1. Steel jacketted heater 75Kg capacity - 1 No.
2. Airconditioner in a 10x15 chamber or room - 1 No.
3. Miscellaneous equipment
(Storage vessels, weighing scale, packing) - 1Set
Raw Materials:
1. Various Waxes of choice - 1.5 tons
2. Solvents -1.5 tons
